In the Renaissance, tomatoes fell out of favour by the aristocracy as they were eating from pewter plates. The acidity of the tomatoes dissolved part of the lead in the pewter which resulted in lead poisoning. Not knowing the chemistry, the blame was put on tomatoes.

A Tomato is a fruit, not a vegetable. The confusion arose after the 1890s when the US supreme court named them a vegetable for taxation purposes. A fruit is the edible part of the plant containing seeds, a vegetable is classified as stem, leaf or root.
